“Jonathan+Olivia, the lovechild of Jackie O’Brien (well named after her niece and nephew) first opened its doors back in September 2005 on Main St, Vancouver. After over a decade as one of the brains behind one of Canada’s most respected high street retailers, she decided that it was time to strike out on her own and introduce a host of now known international collections to the fashion cognoscenti of Vancouver.
From the day the doors first opened on Main St Jonathan+Olivia stood and still stands for forward thinking, intelligent design, a hint of exclusivity, non-pretentious and above all customer service.
The success of the Vancouver store and its clients eagerness to discover new lines persuaded Jackie to look east and in particular the West Queen West neighborhood of Toronto. The area had a similar feel to the Vancouver location, bubbling under and home to cool galleries, bars and restaurants and above all a young fashionable crowd. Since opening in August 2008 Ossington Avenue has become the coolest spot in the city with a host of new nightlife adventures and boutiques moving in.
Seeking a simple, family existence Jackie sadly closed the Vancouver store in January 2010 to marry Nic Jones, founding partner of Surface to Air, and settle down in Toronto and concentrate on developing the Ossington store.
After major renovations in June 2010, Topshop chose Jonathan+Olivia to introduced their brand to the Canadian market with a store-in-store offering limited quantities of carefully selected pieces, mirroring Opening Ceremony in NYC and one of only 8 other stores in the world at the time, no mean feat! The in-store space opened to queues on Ossington Avenue, stacks of press, and a great party at the recently opened Parts&Labor with Dan Levy on the ones and twos and above all an army of delighted shoppers in Toronto!
The deal was for a year, and it was a great experience but it was time to move onwards and upwards… the space was redeveloped for a new menswear and footwear section, designed to echo the BC features of the original store and bring a little bit of the Vancouver love to Toronto, The gents love it.
It’s not all about ‘retail’ either. Over the past year and continuing into the future Jonathan+Olivia has hosted numerous in store events; trunk shows, exhibitions…. even catwalks with Topshop, Creep by Hiroshi Awai, Rita Liefhebber, Wish You Were Here, Surface to Air, Saturdays Surf x Jeremy Koreski, the launch of ‘Jonathan+Olivia presents Family’ including a special charity event/clothing drive with CAMH called “This is West Queen West” coming this April 2013.
Jonathan+Olivia a departure from the expected.
